Nowadays, it is common to see companies investing in training methods for creativity and development . With this, the results are countless, such as motivating, engaging, improving the internal relationship between the sectors and, certainly, contributing to the final result of the business.

In this sense, several companies are looking for innovative ways to apply these trainings.

In addition, the Linkedin says that the creativity is one of the current market trends. That’s because Millennials are at the forefront of the job market.

Millennials is the generation born in the 80s and 90s. The characteristic of these people is that they grew up in a globalized world, with more economic stability and with the emergence of the internet. In other words, it can be said that they had many opportunities to be curious and awaken their creativity.

With the market being renewed, it is common that methodologies and processes also change. An example of this is Rentcars.com, one of the global leaders in connecting people with the best car rental options in the world. She found in the Lego Serious Play methodology a playful way to develop her team .

Training for LEGO creativity Serious Play

The Lego methodology in the company’s creativity training processes was implemented at the beginning of 2019. The results, for sure, are that it is an excellent tool in stimulating the team’s innovation.

The concept of the work is based on the experience of each professional. According to the HR Business Partner of Rentcars.com, Paula Baldão Hahn, who has already used the methodology, the dynamics with Lego present a very satisfactory result.

“One of the secrets of this success is personalization, that is, each one builds in their own way. There is no right or wrong”.

The dynamics involve all people participating 100% of the time, which, according to her, makes the process effective and promotes greater engagement by participants.

Rentcars.com directors were the first to experience this creativity training, which was later replicated to various areas of the company, such as Human Resources, Marketing and Technology.

Thus, several Renties, as the professionals at Rentcars are affectionately called, have already undergone training with Lego. In addition, the technique was essential to one of the internally developed leadership development programs.

The LEGO methodology

According to Paula, “Lego Serious Play rescues this need to work with the playful part, promoting a different and light way of assimilating the contents covered”. HR Business Partner comments that practice activates the creative process and works on different subjects in a more practical and visual way.

The dynamic with Lego makes people feel more comfortable expressing sensitive issues, and promotes greater interaction and empathy by making all participants protagonists.

“One of the advantages is the combination of visual and tactical stimuli, which stimulates both sides of the brain, working the logical and creative part simultaneously ”, complements Paula.

Creativity training for problem solving

Now, see how to apply the LEGO Serious Play (LSP) methodology. There are four steps in order to extract the most from the creativity of the entire team.

1st stage

First, you need to ask a question that still has no solution and is related to the company’s situation. This question has no right or wrong answer.

Here, the purpose is to engage the entire team.  In presenting the issue, describe the challenge clearly and concisely so that everyone understands the question.

2nd stage

Second, there is the part where employees start to exchange information and relate their previous experiences with the problem that needs a solution.

However, connections should not be presented just by speaking or using documents and other papers, but rather LEGO bricks.

In this creativity training, the team must create a model. Using your hands reactivates a part of your memory, which certainly provides a new way of finding the answer. The goal is to build a story with values and meanings.

3rd stage

Now, thirdly, it’s time to share the stories out loud with the other participants, even if simpler or more complex, it doesn’t matter, everything must be shared.

As you relate the journeys you have created, there will certainly be new insights, new creative ideas.

In other words, the questions and interactions between the team also contribute to the final result.

4th stage

Finally, the last step is the completion of the creativity training, based on reflections from the previous phases. At this point, it should be Pacing and reflection on what has been heard, spoken and shared.

Again, remember that nothing is a wrong or a bad idea. The human being can, with all certainty, enjoy and improve everything.

LEGO: much more than a toy

LEGO’s own innovation can inspire your business. LEGO is a company known worldwide for producing toy pieces. However, with the rise of video games and other electronic toys, she needed to reinvent herself and decided to focus on education.

It was in this transformation that they created the LEGO Serious Play model in 2001. Johan Ross and Bart Victor, professors at the IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Robert Rasmussen, director of research and development at Lego Education, thought of this model.

The goal is to take the learning process from children to adults. It was a methodology for internal use, but it ended up becoming popular in the corporate environment. Among the companies that applied LEGO Serious Play are NASA, Coca-Cola, Disney and Google.

Although it will complete 20 years, LSP only arrived in Brazil in 2013 through the company Play in Company. And, according to surveys, it is very well evaluated by both employees and managers.

According to a survey carried out by the American HR talent consultancy LMS, 80% of professionals feel more engaged and productive with processes that involve games .

Another study released by the consultancy Kahoot! showed that corporate training helps to improve the retention of knowledge by employees.

Why take creativity training?

Although there are people who find it easier to come up with creative ideas, a person can develop this skill is not something that cannot be developed.

There are scripts and processes that facilitate the creation of differentiated solutions . Thus, it is possible for each one to develop their own plan to stimulate creativity and apply it in different areas of life.

With creativity, it is possible to face daily and professional challenges much more easily. Creativity helps:

  • Inspire trends;
  • Generate innovations;
  • Solve problems;
  • Find solutions;
  • Encourage courage and daring;
  • Generate a competitive edge;
  • Facilitate adaptation in times of crisis;
  • Promote more effective communication;
  • Favor personal and professional growth;
  • Encourage diversity;
  • Overcoming limits.

Thus, investing in creativity training is investing in employees and in the company itself.

How to stimulate creativity

As already stated in the text, any human being can develop creativity, as long as he seeks for it.

There are some basic tips on how to develop and stimulate creativity, such as:

  • Read more books, even from genres you’re not used to;
  • Research on different subjects, such as historical and scientific curiosities, for example;
  • Doing things that are unusual and out of your routine;
  • Set aside time to learn about other cultures.

With these small actions, but with constancy, it is possible to be more creative!
